I replaced an older model downdraft and like the new one very much. It comes up higher than my old one and collects more of the smells and steam.

Happy with the product. Works well with the cooktop burners closest to the downdraft. Not as well with the burners further away unless fan on high.

Daughters home. fan won't stay up

3 yrs old ( almost ) Kitchenaide 1-800-807-6777 sent out technician March 26. cost $150 . Was told motor arm isn't working. Parts $600.00 plus labour. Extra if other problems. Told $1300 + $600.00 labour to replace to new. Was also told fans were averaging 4 yrs. The stove is installed in a island with no wall areas, so it's not like you can just go to a different style. This does not add up. miss informed or? My son has all Kitchenaid very happy. In next month we will be replacing all kitchen appliances. Like kitchenaide . except retractable downdraft. Daughter is having a tough time with this one.

Have talked to customer service and they offered to repair the pop up after getting an assessment from a repair shop. The parts were on the way for about three months and then finally i get an email from the installer that the replacement parts cannot be obtained. After contacting customer service again, they advised that they would only sell me a new one at a reduced cost and that i would have to pay for the installation myself. The original pop up fan is still not working, and i do not wish to replace it with another pop up as i fear it will not work just like the last one. I have zero confidence that my complaint will be resolved. I strongly feel that if KitchenAid offered to repair my fan and are not able to do so, then they should replace it with a new one, AND warranty the install. The original one had been a problem since installation. Not happy.

I was told this would take less space underneath my cabinet and draw better than the 25 year old Kenmore I had. NOT SO. It is ugly when it is up, does not draw nearly as well and takes up much more underneath space than the other.

Not surprising that we are at the 18th month (beyond the 12mo warranty), and the unit has stopped working. Well, it still sucks air but it sounds like there is an airplane under the counter ready to take off with a bird stuck in its propellers. This is the second unit we've had and hoped for a longer life than 18 months.

Downdraft review
Patsy72
11/22/2018
I am replacing an old downdraft and had high expectations that this one would be much better than the old one. Not sure it is any better and I wish I didn't have to use this type of vent. It was very tricky for the installer because my old vent had a much smaller fan (under the cooktop) . The bulky part which is in the cabinet below the cooktop takes up a lot of space that I used to use for storing pots and pans.

Breaks down all the time but good when it works
Mark007
12/29/2017
I bought this 2 years ago - it sat for 6 months before being installed (ie. wasn't used). A year after it was installed it broke down. The vent would rise but wouldn't stay up and would drop down again so you couldn't use it. As it was technically 18 months old it was outside of the warranty period. I had a Kitchenaid repair person fix it and replaced the armature motor, cover switch and another part (# W10421277). It worked again. I used the vent occasionally for another 4-5 months and now I'm having problems again. When I press the button the unit won't rise unless I continue to depress the button. It rises about 1/3 of the way and stalls. If I then continue to re-press the button many many times it will gradually inch it's way up. I have to stop pressing the button before it reaches the top (as it will then go down) but I have to press it for long enough so that it gets to the full extension so that the fan will then work. To get the fan to go back down I then have to press and gently hold the button down as if I stop so does the vent from going down.
When the unit works it works well but it's been a pain in the neck. Not to mention the back as well since each time someone comes to repair it I have to disconnect it from the underfloor vent and lift out a very heavy and very awkward and bulky unit, not to mention refitting it again which is very challenging.
The unit is expensive, the parts are expensive, the labour to repair it is expensive and its really not worth it. If it worked as it should then it would be great but it just doesn't.

We have had this unit for about 2 years and it has been nothing but trouble.
The pop-up only rose all the way for about 6 months and the on-off switch which starts the raising or lowering of the unit no longer turns the fan off when it lowers. The company we bought it from replaced several parts and the unit worked ok, it seldom would not raise or lower all the way without help and the on-off button would randomly shut the fan off, for another 8 months but since then the unit never raises or lowers without help and the on-off switch never shuts the fan off.

Bad product, with worse customer service
11/14/2016
The product never worked since, installation. After two visits the authorized repair company came back to me and said the critical part required to fix the problem is back ordered, without an ETA. Kitchen Aid offered only to expedite the part request. I have since provided this information, and can do nothing but wait until it is fixed. KitchenAid says that I am eligible only repair and not replacement, after initial 30 days after purchase. The unit was installed 1 month after the purchase to synchronize with the counter installation. It failed on the day of the installation, and it has been 2 months since then. For something which has not worked from day 1, and the customer is waiting for 2+ months, I am not sure this is an acceptable response. This is not an acceptable level of customer service. I had to wait for 3 times for more than 30 minutes to reach an agent.

Downdraft fan
10/30/2016
We bought this fan over a year ago, but are just now installing it. (Kitchen remodels can take a long, LONG time) It's working beautifully, but as I said, we just installed it. I'll get back if it screws up - but I'm not expecting it to, as all of our other Kitchenaid products have worked VERY nicely. I have to add that some of the features you ask about below I really can't address at this time. But one thing I do know: it's SO much quieter than our friends' fan. I LOVE that!

A lot of noise but very little venting
6/24/2016
I bought this downdraft system to avoid installing an overhead hood in my remodeled kitchen. I wanted to maintain the clear sight line from the family room to the kitchen. It is supposed to work with the KitchenAid 30" 4 burner commercial style gas range top that I also installed. The retractable feature works well but the venting is terrible. The fan makes a lot of noise giving the impression that it's sucking large amounts of air. Unfortunately, it won't even pull the steam coming from a pot of boiling water! What a disappointment. KitchenAid, Do you have any suggestions??

Works OK but not so stylish
6/17/2016
We have our stove in an island so we had to get a downdraft. This one is pretty and it works great, but I thinks it goes way too high when you turn it on, what makes it look a little weird, because usually I have people seating on the other side of the island, and when I cook this thing goes really high so I can hardly see my guests on the other side. I works great and that´s what matters, but I wish it wasn´t that high. Also, I though the sound level was going to be better since it is a new appliance with better technology, I guessed, but the noise is just as bad as the old one we had.

4/11/2016
We have all kitchen aid appliances in our kitchen. We were very surprised at the quality of the downdraft as it did not come with a power cord (you had to purchase and wire it in yourself) and several parts were not in alignment. One of the above counter stainless steel end caps was cut crooked so it overlaps on the counter side and underlaps on the cooktop side This is Kitchen Aid pricing at discount store quality

A bust
9/15/2015
In 2014 I choose a kitchen aid Pop up bc it was the cheaper choice to the Miele. since then I think there are more options. After six months the pop up failed and was dropping down when I tried to clean it. It was broken and after a series of reconditioning I put my foot down and demanded a new replacement. I had to fight for this for months and finally got a new one. it is fine now. The kitchen aid customer service has gotten so bad in the last few years that I decided to never buy one again

I purchased an entire kitchen with kitchen aide appliances. The downdraft looks great but I've had problems from the get go...wouldn't go up/down correctly as per other reviews and now goes up but does not turn on. I am getting ready to replace it after multiple service calls, but now that I'm reading these reviews it sounds like I'm not the only one. Have any of you followed up with the customer service rep?

Will not properly recess after use
7/3/2015
We bought this unit a couple years ago, along with the KitchenAide cooktop, refrigerator, oven, warming drawer & microwave. The motor that pulls the vent fan back down does not work properly to recess the unit back to the non-use position. Ours sticks about 4" above the cooktop & locks up. Can't get it to move at all. Also just scheduled technician thru KitchenAide to have the "3rd" ice maker installed in the fridge. KitchenAide not what they used to be.

At this point we are waiting for the 3 visit from our installer because this vent is sucking air from the backside. On the last visit the installer said it was defective and would need to be replaced. Also the top stainless piece that rests on the counter top area is absolutely hideous! While I am very happy with all of the other Kitchen Aid appliances we purchased at the same time as this downdraft, oven-micro combo and dishwasher, this was a bad choice. We cannot have a exhaust vent above our cook top and a downdraft is the only solution. I wish I had chosen another brand.

KitchenAid Down draft
Annie B
10/29/2014
This is the second, KitchenAid, down draft I bought, as the other one blew a motor after 7 years. I hope this one lasts longer. The motor does not suck up the air from the farthest burner. I had no choice but to buy the same one again. After all these years, you would think they would have improved the suction of the down draft! They did NOT improve it at all, in fact I liked the old one better. Don't you trail test them at all???

I love kitchenaid... but... I am so disappointed in this product. It was installed and didn't work correctly. I had it repaired through an authorized service provider and, after 5 visits, they had basically rebuilt the unit. Now, approximately 1 year later, the product is not working again and, of course, is 1 month past the 1 year warranty. I have used the unit minimally and only with great care, so it shouldn't have any issues. Basically, the unit does not go up and down properly. It is currently stuck in the down position. I have contacted the company so hopefully they will remedy the situation. I am hopeful that I just received a 'bad apple' and this is an isolated incident. Nonetheless, consider purchasing the extended warranty on the product.

Brought this product 2 months ago. Used it twice and was very pleased. Love that it comes up high and is able it vent the steam from the front burners. The third time I used the vent it would not retract all the way down. Called the repair service department for the store I purchased it from. It took 3 weeks for the part to come in then while the part was being put in another part broke. Would I recommend this product? At this time no!

I bought this appliance as part of other 5 for kitchen remodeling. Using a retractable downdraft gave us bigger burners for same 30" cooktop. The drawback we found is that it was hard to retrofit using the existing vent location under the counter. The contractor had to build a adapter for it which basically took all the cabinet space under the cooktop. Perhaps, a more modular adapter would has help here.In addition, we had some problems with the on-off switch, which had to be replaced.

I've only used it a few times and did manage to knock over and crash a ceramic utensil holder when I lowered the vent, but I guess that's my problem. I did use it with a grill pan on the burner doing some small steaks with the fan on high and the smoke was definitely wafting to the ceiling, not being totally sucked in by the vent. But it has definitely solved a design problem since we have a very high cathedral ceiling in our kitchen which made an overhead vent impossible. But I must say, it looks so cool and makes me feel very Jetsons space age!

Love the retraction feature but the system often does not function properly. The unit will not come up properly with a simple push of the button. It requires holding the button and waiting for the system to engage then releasing the button. Proper timing and fiddling with it is frustrating because the system will disengage and retract instead of coming on. (Possibly an installation error!?) Also, downdraft system does not draw as much as I had hoped although it is much better than our old downdraft system (Jenn-Aire).
