Extended warranties are usually very inexpensive and can save you thousands in the future. Some can even cover extra costs that result, such as cost of food that spoils when your fridge dies. It's simple and inexpensive to purchase extended warranties and one of the smartest ways to protect your investment.

Appliances can be large, heavy, and expensive and you probably don't have the special tools or expertise needed to fix them in a crisis. If you can spare a few thousand dollars without batting an eyelash for new appliances should they break tomorrow, don't buy a warranty. Too expensive to have so many issues

Submitted by It's hot in Texas so we need ice - 8/30/2016

We purchased this beautiful product as part of a major kitchen renovation in October 2010. Almost immediately we had various issues with the freezer. The ice unit failed and sent melted water flowing onto our newly restored 1900 wood floors. Technician came out and initially fixed the issue. Once again, it happened and this time the ice maker froze up with no hope of removing the ice holder. Technician came out again and basically said that this product is not worth it's money. During the first year we had it repaired 3 times to no avail and then miraculously, the warrantee was up. We have lived without ice and a stained door panel from the leaky ice machine for 6 years. After several emails and calls to KitchenAid, nothing is done. I see why the model is now discontinued, but the company should make their old customers happy, or they will not be repeaters.

Adequate but expensive replacement

Submitted by Cluecelt - 10/8/2015

I bought this refrigerator because the earlier model had a failure of the motherboard and Kitchenaid chose not to make the replacement part. There are very minor improvements from the earlier model but not enough to make me want to buy this if I didn't need to. Also, the new water filter leaves the water and ice with the slight odor of mildew. My hope is that this one proves more dependable than the last and that the next very expensive filter does a better job.

Buyer Beware

Submitted by Sam Loya - 9/29/2015

I purchased Model:KSSC42QTS00 in 2/27/08 for a kitchen remodel as a builtin refrigerator. The size and features was ideal for what we wanted. We thought we were purchasing a high quality refrigerator only to learn we may have made a mistake in the coming months. At first I noticed excessive noise coming from the fan units that seemed abnormal. I called Kitchenaid and a service technician came out and said all was well. I have lived with this refrigerator for the past several years and was never satisfied with the refrigerator side, however the freezer side was beautiful. I did however experience ice buildup around the ice maker but this was minor, dump the ice and clean the unit and start over. It is now 9/28/2015 and I came home yesterday with the plan to vacuum out the top compressor area to maintain high efficiency. I turned off the power switch located behind the top cover and vacuumed out all the dust that had accumulated over the years. I have done this with all my refrigeration products over the years. When I completed my work I turned the power switch back on only to be surprised of a system failure. I tried several times trying to restart the unit and it failed each time. Time to call Kitchenaid. I called kitchenaid and described my events and when I mentioned I turned off the power switch she responded with a big sigh of grief. I questioned her why the expression when it is a factory switch for removing power. She responded with call a service technician, which I did. The technician immediately after looking at the problem said looks like a power board. I said OK lets fix it. The problem is no replacement parts available, its a know problem with these units and they are on backorder with no due date. We can replace the power board with a reconditioned board but this will take several weeks since we have no spares. Now the real shocker, the cost of repair is $900.00. I own four houses with refrigerators and an RV and all of them have lasted longer than fifteen years trouble free. These where your average refrigerator like Whirlpool, Kenmore and Frigidaire. Why is KitchenAID who is part of Whirlpool having such a catastrophic failure so early in its life cycle, I have no idea. But rest a sure KitchenAID knows and they are not active in correcting the problem nor supporting the unit with spare parts. Now don't get me wrong here, I would love to say I love my KitchenAID. But you have read my story and all I can say is Buyer Beware! As for me only wished a company like KitchenAID/Whirlpool would come to the plate and take care of their customers. This refrigerator offers a lot of nice features for a 42 inch model but what good does it do to spend this kind of money for a product you now know is going to fail in a few short years if not sooner. Sincerly, Sam Loya

Reliability and Repair Issues Undermine Product

Submitted by jack - 9/6/2015

There's great disappointment in an expensive and otherwise fine product that becomes a maintenance headache in so short a span (6 years). The repair technician is a nice man but unable to tame this demon. The freezer began to leave puddles of water on the floor, and ice build up in the freezer. The freezer drawer slides failed and were replaced ($500). The unit balks on a restart, sometimes taking multiple tries to restart - as if a relay won't latch. A new control board might fix the problem, but are not available from KitchenAid? The seals no longer seal properly. The control board is quoted at $1000 from another source? Really? And will it fix the problem? Nobody knows. How much money does one sink into a product that may never work again? My advice to Kitchen Aid is simple: if a customer has a problem, send a factory technician to solve it. Model KBFC42FTS00, S/N QU4854057.

So far a great refrigerator

Submitted by MAG - 9/4/2015

We have had this unit in our new house for about 2 months now. The overall size and looks of this model are impressive. The bins work smooth with the roller bearing design, a definite plus. The stainless surface is not as bad to clean hand prints of as I would have guessed. The ice/water dispenser opening could be larger to accommodate filling large cups. The water catch tray in the dispenser holds very little, easily runs down the door when full. The freezer is tight on space but that's to be expected with a side by side unit. Be aware, when you have to move this unit it is very heavy!

Kitchenaid KSSC42QTS00 Problems , Problems

Submitted by jim - 7/30/2015

I have a 2007 KSSC42QTS00 That is in a 2nd home with very little use. It just quit working and after sending the electronic control board for repair 2 times and still not working . I am having to buy a new refrigerator because no Kitchenaid repair techs can figure out why it won work. I call Kitchenaid and no help. I am switching to a Sub Zero. We have 3 homes with Kitchenaid appliances but I don't think I will ever buy one again. Refrigerator has been out for 4 weeks . We waited a week each time for the rebuilt control Board since it is not available to purchase and each time it wouldn't work when it came back and was installed.

Nothing but Problems

Submitted by Dissapointed - 5/10/2015

We bought a KSSC42QVS02 in 2011, replacing a sub zero refrigerator. Have had constant issues with fridge not cooling(ice builds up behind the back freezer panel and requires a repair tech to resolve). Then the control panel went out 12/28/14 and since the part is not manufactured it did not get fixed until 1/26/15 (when a part was finally located). So, for about a month we were without a fridge. Then when the part is installed you have to shut down the whole unit (this means emptying out the freezer too) for 24 hours. This same part failed again on 4/24/15 and we are again without a fridge. We have been told Whirlpool has begun making this part but wont release the part until mid-May. No ETA when we can expect the fridge to be fixed this time. The other issue which I have seen mentioned in the reviews is the ice maker. The ice freezes up and cannot be dispensed. You can't remove the ice maker bin when this happens so I've had to use a hair dryer to help break up the ice so that blocks of ice can be removed from the ice bin. I recommend purchasing the extended warranty for this product. Its unacceptable to spend the amount of money it costs for this refrigerator to have this many problems and not be able to use it.

main control board "NO LONGER AVAILABLE"

Submitted by Bill 5777 - 2/9/2015

I have had a KSSS42QMX01 for 8 years. The main control board went bad. It is no longer available, so they sent it out for repair. It came back "NOT REPAIRABLE'. Now I have a $5,000.00 refrigerator that doesn't work. Looks like the new "KSS" models have the same problem.

Little different from the one that failed after 8-1/2 years.

Submitted by Pissedoffone - 1/27/2015

For the record, I did not choose to purchase a new KitchenAid refrigerator. The one I bought and installed 8-1/2 years ago had a motherboard failure and I discovered that KitchenAid chose not to continue to manufacture that particular part. I was offered what they considered a good deal on a new model and bought it because other built-ins were no less expensive. My hope is that this one lasts longer and that KitchenAid will better support its products in the future. FYI: I have a 20 year old frig in the garage that still runs great.

Horrible ice maker design on door

Submitted by misled - 12/29/2014

The Kitchen aid refrig is excellent except for the ice maker located on the door. The ice maker literally freezes up and you have to either use a hair dryer or hot water to pour through the ice maker to thaw out the jammed ice. Go with the standard old ice maker as it will make more ice than the Kitchen Aid ice maker. Poor design. We are thinking about selling this refrig and buying a refrig with the old type ice maker.

42 inch Built-In

Submitted by freelee - 12/16/2014

This is my second Kitchen Aid 42 inch built-in. The first I purchased in 2001. In 2008 we lost electricity for 2-weeks due to a hurricane. I wish I would have known to empty the drain pan before the power came back on and sucked up all the water in the drain tray, through the heating coil above it that had developed pin-holes from the copper sitting in water for 2-weeks. I spent the next 6 yrs dealing with repairs, finally gave up. Bought a new one, Love it, loved the old one too, although I replaced the compressor 3 times, twice covered by warranty. Also buy a surge protector, it helps save the computer in the top!

Stores more than the KitchenAid it replaced

Submitted by schnoodle - 12/10/2014

I purchased a home with a KitchenAid "built in" fridge with cabinet front panels. Unfortunately, the panels wouldn't fit a new version of that so I opted for this model. This was after looking at the GE Monograms (which were CONSIDERABLY more expensive). I was pleasantly surprised that this holds more than the same sized fridge it replaced. I also like that the ice bin is in the door above the dispenser. It's easily removable too. It's also quiet and I believe will be much more energy efficient than the old one.

Submitted by SOKE2 - 11/8/2014

We have had this frig for a few months now and overall, I am pleased with it. My main complaint is that the ice maker shoots ice in all directions. I only use a wide glass with it, or I'll be mopping up the floor. If the ice maker hasn't been used in a while, it also clogs. I never had such problems with my Samsung.

Nice Refrigerator

Submitted by Ken11 - 10/27/2014

Nice Refrigerator all around. Some enhancements to the predecessor model (which we had for 15 years), such as temp display for both compartments, built-in water filter, digital door access controls and display, and more easily removable ice bin. The ice cubes are not as uniform as one would like, and the dispenser tends to spit quite a bit on the floor. Only other negative is that the noise level is a little more noticeable than on prior model.

Second Fridge was better

Submitted by THSAC - 3/1/2014

I initially had a GE Profile that I got from a Scratch and Dent place a few years ago. Bad move, lesson learned. I got a great deal, but had to replace a panel, order some parts and eventually get rid of it. I looked at a lot of reviews and decided to go with this fridge. First the Bad: Our first fridge had a water leak. They determined it was likely an O-ring in a solenoid, that fed water to the ice maker. Apparently this is common. Warning: DO NOT register your fridge right away, otherwise you might have to deal with KA instead of the dealer. Second thing, our fridge had a burning smell. We were told this was also common. It's a dusty, plastic smell, which they claim is "normal" as the fridge comes to life. I never read any complaints about this in the past, anywhere. We turned off the ice maker and the dealer ordered a new fridge. DO NOT let them fix it. Make them get you a new one. The second fridge has no leaks, but the burning smell is still there. We were told that this eventually goes away. I read a lot of reviews and no one had this issue. The smell happens once every 4-5 days. It seems to be going away, but that does not seem normal to me. The Good: Great looking fridge, ice maker works great. The design is terrific. The repairman that came out for the second fridge, to verify that the smell was "normal" said KA makes some of the best refrigerators in the business. He was a huge fan of SZ's, but put the KA at the next tier. I would recommend this fridge.

Overall a good product but is to loud

Submitted by Elvis - 1/8/2014

This is a good refrigerator. Plenty of space, attractive and keeps everything cool or frozen. I paid extra for the KitchenAid super quiet dishwasher. I wish you had the same option for the refrigerator which runs almost all the time. The DB level is in the 38 to 41 range. The dishwasher which only runs an hour or so ever dry other day is in the 20-25 DB level. It seems to me you would want the refrigerator which runs 24 hours a day to be quiet as opposed to the dishwasher that runs an hour or so every other day. I asked the dealer for a quiet refrigerator. My old (1999) KitchenAid built in was quiet. I was shocked at how loud the new refrigerator is. Is there any way to dampen the noise on the refrigerator? Thanks,

Although we had to replace the same refrigerator with only 5 years, because the boards were damaged due to a power failure and water got into the lines, I wanted the same one. Hope this one lasts for a longer time.

Great looking refrig, very clean lines, lots of space , easy

We bought this model Kitchenaid refrig because it was a perfect fit also had the clean lines I was looking for. The refrig has a lot of space and easy to wipe up inside. The ice cube maker works like a charm, it is always full. We has a Subzero before and the ice maker never worked right. It is also a very quit running refrig. Love it.

I love my new fridge! It is so spacious, keeps thing super cold, the drawers glide really easily, and I love that it has a self closing door, too. The kids love the ice cube maker and water dispenser. I love that the water comes out at a decent rate (not super slow like our last fridge).

I am extremely pleased with the exterior look of the refrigerator in my kitchen. The cabinet depth is a very nice design. It runs quitely. The only reason i didn't give excellent is due to the capacity size. My dream is that a cabinet depth refrigerator can be deeper on the inside. The freezer is quite small..

This is my second Kitchen Aid refrigerator. This first lasted 18 years and unfortunately had to be replaced with this newer model. I am missing the space in between the first drawer and second drawer of the refrigerator side, where I used to be able to put a pizza or small 1- 1/2" tray in. Wish that feature was back. Also wish the freezer had a bit more space so that I could get a frozen pizza in it without having to turn it on the diagonal. Cuts out lots of storage space.

I bought this product to replace a GE Monogram refrigerator. The primary reason I decided to go for Kitchenaid was its elegant design, fit, modern features and above all affordable pricing. The product is in use everyday although I am having some trouble with the ice maker as the ice is getting stuck frequently. Otherwise I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a modern 42" side by side refrigerator.

Built in refrigerators are pretty expensive and I was very apprehensive about buying the product. Once I had it installed I soon found out that kitchen aid is very well worth the money. I am very happy with this product. Thank you kitchen Aid Mark
